He was passionate about nature and loved seeking adventure through activities such as deer hunting, fishing, golfing, snowboarding, and dirt biking. However, his greatest happiness came from spending time with his loved ones. Hunter was a gifted student-athlete, participating in baseball, basketball, and football at Trinity High School, where he graduated in 2016. He then continued his education at UNC-Charlotte, majoring in business and finance. There, he made significant contributions to the college community as the Social Chairman of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and Vice-President of Recruitment for the Interfraternity Council.

The family of Hunter Thomas Awtrey mourns the loss of their beloved Hunter who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on July 5, 2020 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington due to serious injuries sustained from a fall. He was born on August 19, 1998 to Chris and Lindsey Awtrey (now Lindsey Miller), and grew up in Siler City and Archdale. Hunter was a talented athlete and enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and football in school and youth leagues. He graduated from Trinity High School in 2016 and was a senior at UNC-Charlotte studying business and finance, where the school plans to award him his degree posthumously. Hunter was an active member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, serving as social chairman and vice-president of recruitment for the Interfraternity Council. He was also an outdoorsman and loved deer hunting, fishing, golfing, snowboarding, and riding his dirt bike. Family was very important to him and he made quality time with them a priority. He was highly respected for his work ethic, good nature, upbeat attitude, and outgoing personality.

Hunter was employed as an intern in the Client Services Department of Northwestern Mutual in Charlotte at the time of his death. He was a devout Christian who regularly attended Loves Creek Baptist Church in Siler City and First Church of God in Archdale. Hunter is survived by his mother, Lindsey Miller (T. R.) of Trinity, father, Chris Awtrey (Leanna) of Siler City, brother, Jace Awtrey, stepbrothers, Caleb Alcorn, and Tyler Miller, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, and his girlfriend of 5 years, Maggie Monroe. Hunter's selfless act of donating his corneas will also bring sight to someone in need. A private memorial service for family and close friends is planned. Memorials may be made to the Hunter Awtrey "My Wish" Memorial Scholarship Fund at any BB&T. Arrangements are being handled by Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.
